One in five children will suffer from a mental, emotional or behavioral disorder. If this were the incidence rate of leukemia, we would rally as a community to eradicate the disease. Where is the same care and concern for children with mental illness? Gather with the TEDxSanAntonio community to hear the parent’s perspective, the child’s view and how the family and community is affecting change. Learn how you can be an important part of the solution.
Event Info
Date & Time: | Saturday, September 13, 2014; 1-4 pm |
Location: | Morgan’s Wonderland 5223 David Edwards Drive, San Antonio, TX 78233 [directions] |
This Salon offers a unique, interactive exploration of the issues that are preventing access to care and the healing process for our most vulnerable citizens – children. We’ll watch some excellent TED talks about the issues and then hear from local people working on the issue from different perspectives, including:
- “Where are the Casseroles?” – Community conversation led by Lisa Sanchez, Michelle Jenkins and Kim Rice
- “Will Neuroscience Ever Provide Anything Useful for Children’s Mental Health?” – Dr. Joseph Blader, UTHSC-SA
- The Family System in an Age of Change with Dr. Marcela Polanco, PhD, OLLU
- San Antonio Police Department’s Mental Health Unit – a demonstration of their de-escalation approaches
During three planned breaks, attendees can participate in a guided writing exercise, share their story in the video room, and see tableaus designed to visualize stigma in action and how we all play a role in supporting children and families with mental illness.
You’ll learn about an American Medical Association approved pediatrician checklist that can and should be integrated into wellness checks, and how your school district has health advisory councils that are led by parents to guide the district’s approach to mental health.
Snacks and beverages will be provided during this fast paced and empowering salon. Master of Ceremonies for the salon is San Antonio personality Chuck Cureau.
Please note the event will be videoed and attendees may be included in the recording. Salon attendees will also be in included in the One in Five Minds e-news distribution list.

F.A.Q.
Q: What is TED?
A: TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading.
Q: What is a salon?
A: A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host to increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation. In TEDx terms, a Salon is an event that, unlike the usual TED events that cover a broad range of issues, is a focused exploration of a particular subject. In particular, this salon was inspired by the standing ovation and immediate, positive reaction to 2013 TEDxSanAntonio speaker, Liza Long. To see how she inspired us to action, see TEDxSanAntonio.com/2013-speakers/liza-long.
Q: Do you offer scholarships to attend for people who can’t afford the ticket?
A: Yes. A limited number of scholarships are available. To inquire, please email: Liz.Breitman@claritycgc.org
Q: Where does the money go?
A: The proceeds from this salon go to TEDxSanAntonio and Fiesta for the Mind, a non-profit organization (501(c)3 status pending) that brings “ideas worth spreading” to the San Antonio community through thoughtful and innovative talks during its annual conference and other events. We use funds for our all-volunteer organization in many ways, including but not limited to interactive exhibits, entertainment, food, scholarships, viewing parties and other salons. One in Five Minds, the South Texas campaign to end the stigma of mental illness, is a partner in this salon event, providing resources, but is not receiving funds from this event.
Q: Do you offer refunds? Are tickets transferable?
A: No. If you cannot make the event, the cost of your ticket will be considered a charitable donation to TEDxSanAntonio.
Q: Can children attend?
A: Yes, when accompanied by an adult. Another idea is to purchase wristbands for access to Morgan’s Wonderland and visit the park with your family in advance of the event. The typical adult admission to Morgan’s Wonderland is $15, but a group rate of $8 for adults and children has been established. Your wristband is good for admission prior to the Salon, or within 30 days of the salon itself. Morgan’s Wonderland is the world’s first fully accessible park for all children. Children with physical disabilities may visit the park at no cost, but please check the qualifications on Morgan’s Wonderland site first.
Q: Is it too late to sponsor?
A: No! If you’d like to help us put on the event, please email us at sponsor [at] tedxsanantonio [dot] com. We are still accepting both cash and in-kind donations.
Q: Have you selected speakers? / How are speakers selected for salon events?
A: We publicize the opportunity to help organize the event on Twitter, Facebook and the website. If you have an idea for a salon event, you can submit a proposal.
Q: How can I stay in the loop about TEDxSanAntonio events?
A: Subscribe to our email updates.
Q: I have an additional question. How may I contact you?
A: Please email us at registration [at] tedxsanantonio [dot] com
Please help us thank our wonderful SPONSORS!
