Progress can be slow at times, but in some fields that lag has potentially devastating impacts. As part of this year’s theme, “Now is the Time,” TEDxSanAntonio speakers Ted Fox and H. Drew Galloway dive into how change in public spheres construct a brighter future for San Antonio at the Main Event on November 18, 2017.
The State of Texas Healthcare
Formerly a CEO in the healthcare industry with 30 years’ experience, Ted Fox has spent his career working to improve public health. Fox has researched the “dismal state” of the healthcare industry in Texas based on several key indicators collected from data recorded in May 2017 that suggests the state is on-par with many third-world countries in contrast to national trends in the United States.
“It appears that healthcare for Texas women, moms/daughters/sisters/etc., is specifically being targeted by State legislative and administrative leadership. Sharing the data from a variety of credible sources, it is hoped, will galvanize attendees to demand better, for all Texans.”
Fox has spent much of his career in public health services in California and Texas working in low income neighborhoods to improve health services. He currently serves as a board member of Texas Doctors for Social Responsibility.
Bringing Texas Voting into the 21st Century
- Drew Galloway, Executive Director of MOVE San Antonio Foundation, is dedicated to empowering young Texans to exercise their democratic rights. MOVE San Antonio combats the continuous setbacks from outdated voting technology and increasingly restrictive legal requirements to drive toward a new version of democracy.
“Welcome to Democracy 2.0, a group of technological and policy innovations that will revolutionize the American voting process, solving three systemic barriers to civic participation: 1) Verification; 2) Access, and 3) Security. By implementing automatic voter registration, an online voting interface, and securing the entire electoral system on a public blockchain, we will create a modernized, transparent, and inclusive environment for our democracy.”
Galloway has partnered with organizations working to advance voting rights, including The Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life at The University of Texas at Austin, the Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation at The White House, the City of San Antonio City Council, and the Bexar County Commissioner’s Court.
